Pumpkins - Picking Your Pumpkin for Carving

If you are going to carve your pumpkin you need to pick a pumpkin that is suitable. When picking your pumpkin you will want to look for the following features:

  • 1. The Pumpkin will need to be large enough for the design you want to put on it.
  • 2. The Pumpkin will need to be able to sit up on the floor by itself. A pumpkin that falls over or sits crooked will not be suitable for most designs. For safety reasons you want to make sure the pumpkin won't fall over and allow the flaming candle to fall out.
  • 3. The Pumpkin will need to be free from soft spots or blemishes on the surface. These can be the start of the pumpkin going bad. You will want the pumpkin to last as long as possible so starting out with a bad spot will really limit how long it last.
  • 4. The pumpkin should have a stem long enough to allow you to safely open the lid to light the candle. We suggest 2-3". This stem should be solid to prevent damage to the pumpkin.
