AMERICAN LEGION BUCKEYE GIRLS STATE PROGRAM
2008
Greeneview High School
News Release
October 17, 2007
Jen Talbott, daughter of Katie Edgington
and Anthony Talbott, will represent Greeneview High School at Buckeye Girls
State (BGS) at Ashland University this summer. BGS is designed to educate Ohio’s
young women in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of good
citizenship.
She will learn about City, County and
State Government by getting involved in the process. The girls selected are
called Delegates and
are assigned to one of two political parties, Federalist or Nationalist. As an
active member of their party, they learn political party structure
and have a definite function in the government system.
Jen is sponsored by the
American Legion, Wilbur Thomas Post #155,
Jamestown, Oh - District 3. She wrote in her application. “Leadership
means more than guiding others with confidence. A leader seizes opportunities
and takes charge of both a situation and their life. This is a quality I need to
develop if I am to succeed in the goals I have set for myself. There is no doubt
in my mind that the Buckeye Girls State Program would be an excellent
opportunity for me. I would love to represent Greeneview High School, and at the
same time be a part of an experience in which I am truly interested.
Chelsie Lawson, daughter of Gary and
Kelly Lawson, was selected as the alternate to Girls State. She will represent
GHS in the event that Jen is unable to attend.

BUCKEYE BOY STATE
2008
Dillon Oney will represent Greeneview High School and the Jamestown, Ohio, Wilbur Thomas VFW Post 155 at Buckeye Boys State 2008. Eddie Bonk will serve as alternate. Buckeye Boys State will be held on the campus of Bowling Green State University from June 14 – 22, 2008. Buckeye Boys State (BBS) is a nine-day hands-on experience in the operation of the Democratic form of government, the organization of political parties, and the relationship of one to the other in shaping Ohio Government.
Founded in 1936, BBS is the largest Boys State program in the nation with an attendance of one thousand three hundred young men annually. Through the Boys State goal of learning by doing, young men learn about city, county, and state government through a non-partisan objective education approach. Opportunities are available to expand skills and interests through special program segments on Ohio laws and the Court systems; Banks and Realty company operations; Public Utility companies; Law Enforcement; Newspaper operations; and Legislative Services, conducted by staff members versed in the area of instruction and each mirroring a similar real experience.
One of the objectives afforded by Boys State is the friendships young men form with other Boys State citizens, many of whom will become life-long friends. Dillon is the son of Mike and Terri Oney. He is member of the Rams baseball team and YRC Summer and Fall Baseball League. During the fall, he is a member of the GHS marching band. He is an honor roll student and Ohio Heritage Conference Scholar Athlete. He received the Principal’s Citizenship Award and has perfect attendance. His hobbies include baseball, wakeboarding, drumming, reading and photography. He is a member of South Solon Church of Christ in Christian Union. He has played for the community in numerous band performances. He plans to attend Wright State University and major in communications after graduating from high school. Dillon commented, “I am proud to represent GHS at Buckeye Boys State 2008. I believe it will be a chance of a lifetime, being able to experience such a great gathering of future leaders. I will represent Greeneview and everything it stands for as a school and in the community. I will represent the morals that Greeneview upholds, and I know I will show everyone at Bowling Green that Greeneview is a superb school.”
Eddie is the son of Tom and Marney Bonk. He is a
member of SODA (students opposed to drugs and alcohol) Club and Project Charlie.
He is on the Rams varsity football, bowling and track teams and he performs with
Sensations Show Choir. He has received numerous honors including: 4.0 GPA,
perfect attendance, Principal’s Citizenship Award, December Student of the
Month, He is an Ohio Heritage Conference Scholar Athlete and he serves on the
